Frequently Asked Questions

Here you'll find answers to frequently asked questions about replacing drum brakes.

Why is my drum brake squeaking after installation?

In most cases, the brake cable is too tight. Loosen the adjustment nut slightly, until the wheel can turn freely. The brake should not engage until you pull the brake lever .

My brakes barely work—what could be causing this?

First, check the brake cable adjustment. Tighten the adjustment nut slightly until the brake lever offers noticeable resistance. Make sure the handlebars are in the upright position so that the adjustment is correct.

What happens if the spacers are installed incorrectly?

If the spacer washers are not installed correctly, the wheel will not be centered in the fork. This can cause the brake to drag or the wheel to run out of true. When looking in the direction of travel, there should be one spacer washer on the right and two on the left.

Does the notch on the drum brake really have to point upward?

Yes. The notch ensures that the brake fits correctly into the bracket. If it is positioned incorrectly, the brake may not engage properly or may even come loose.
