In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process of replacing the drum brake on your VMAX E-Scooter . These instructions apply to all models with a front drum brake.
Tools needed
- 14 mm wrench or socket
- 17 mm wrench or socket
- Spare part: Drum brake
Instructions
Loosen the brake cable

First, loosen the nut on the brake cable using a 14 mm wrench. This nut secures the brake cable to the drum brake.

Once the nut has been removed, you can pull the brake cable out of its housing and disconnect it from the brake drum.
Next, carefully remove the spring and the rubber cover from the brake cable.
Remove the front wheel

Now loosen the two nuts on the wheel axle using a 17 mm wrench (one nut on the left and one on the right).
Once both nuts have been removed, you can carefully remove the front wheel from the fork.
Remove the spacer washers and brake drum

Now carefully remove the spacers on both sides of the axle.
Then pull the old brake drum out of the wheel.
Install a new drum brake

Install the new drum brake in the wheel.
Make sure the notch on the drum brake is facing upward. This position is important for the brake to function properly.
Install the wheel and adjust the brakes
First, slide the spacers back onto the axle.
Important:
When viewed in the direction of travel, there should be 1 spacer on the right and 2 spacers on the left. Pay close attention to this arrangement during assembly to ensure that the wheel is properly seated and the brake functions correctly.

Then carefully reinstall the wheel into the fork and tighten the axle nuts with a 17 mm wrench.
Next, reinsert the brake cable and secure it with the 14 mm nut.

First slide the spring back onto the brake cable, then slide the rubber cover back on.
Adjust the brake properly: Make sure the handlebars are in an upright position. Apply the brake until it’s just about to start squeaking. This will give you optimal braking performance.
Check the result
After assembly, check that all parts are correctly installed and that the wheel turns freely.
Then carefully test the brakes to make sure the drum brake engages properly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Here you'll find answers to frequently asked questions about replacing drum brakes.
Why is my drum brake squeaking after installation?
In most cases, the brake cable is too tight. Loosen the adjustment nut slightly until the wheel can turn freely. The brake should only engage when you pull the brake lever .
My brakes barely work—what could be causing this?
First, check the brake cable adjustment. Tighten the adjustment nut slightly until the brake lever offers noticeable resistance. Make sure the handlebars are in the upright position so that the adjustment is correct.
What happens if the spacers are installed incorrectly?
If the spacers are not installed correctly, the wheel will not be centered in the fork. This can cause the brake to drag or the wheel to run out of true. When looking in the direction of travel, there should be one spacer on the right and two spacers on the left.
Does the notch on the drum brake really have to point upward?
Yes. The notch ensures that the brake is properly seated in the bracket. If it is misaligned, the brake may not engage properly or may even come loose.
