Riding E-Scooters in Switzerland: The Most Important Rules

By Laura – May 2025

An e-scooter lets you get around flexibly and in an eco-friendly way. To help you navigate traffic safely, here are the key points regarding riding, equipment, and what’s allowed. These guidelines apply to Switzerland. If you’re traveling abroad with your scooter, please check the local rules in advance—they can vary significantly.

Note: This article is for general informational purposes only and does not constitute legal advice. Changes and regional variations are possible—please check with official sources.

Where are you allowed to ride an e-scooter?

In Switzerland, e-scooters are classified as light motorcycles—and are subject to clear regulations:

  • ✅ Allowed:
  • • Bike paths and bike lanes
  • • If there is no bike path: the regular roadway
  • ❌ Not allowed:
  • • Sidewalks and pedestrian zones (unless expressly permitted by a traffic sign)

Traffic Rules for E-Scooters in Switzerland

  • Maximum speed: 20 km/h plus a 10% margin of error – equivalent to up to 22 km/h
  • Minimum age: 14 years or older with a Category M license; 16 years or older without a license
  • For one person only: Passengers are not allowed
  • Helmet: not required, but highly recommended.

Drinking and driving

In Switzerland, the same blood alcohol limits apply to riding an e-scooter as to driving a car:

  • 0.5 ‰: legal blood alcohol limit – at this level, a person is considered unfit to drive
  • 0.8 ‰ or higher: considered a serious DUI offense, resulting in license suspension and criminal charges

👉 Don’t drink and ride. Ride sober or use public transportation or a taxi—better safe than sorry.

Features of your e-scooter

In order for your e-scooter to be approved for use on public roads in Switzerland, it must be equipped with the following:

  • White front light & red rear light
  • Two independent brakes
  • A bell as an acoustic warning signal

Most VMAX e-scooters come standard with reflectors and built-in front and rear turn signals—for greater visibility and maximum safety on the road.

Insurance & Registration

You don't need a license plate or special liability insurance. Personal liability insurance usually covers damages. If in doubt, check your insurance coverage.

Conclusion

Follow the e-scooter traffic rules, ride safely, and make sure you have the right gear—then nothing will stand in the way of your riding fun.
